We Have One Purpose. Each of us has one true purpose – to love one another. As we fulfill that purpose, our lives begin to change as do the lives of those around us. Loving someone doesn’t mean that you have to condone their actions; it means that you see that divine spark in them despite their actions. Living a life with love as your purpose brings peace of mind and hope in the face hopelessness.

From where I sit, I embrace my one true purpose, and I will love my fellowman.

Get Out of Your Head. The intellect is a wonderful aspect of the human experience. Over the past century or so, we have celebrated the advances of science and scientific thought. So much so, that feelings and emotions were seen as lesser aspects of human existence. Over the last couple of decades, science has begun to study the impact of living from the heart instead of living from our intellect. When we get out of our heads and see coherence with the heart, that marriage of thought and feeling possesses the power to truly change our world. Get out of your head and let your heart lead you.

From where I sit, I let my heart lead and see miracles happen.

You Are Light. Within each of us is a spark. It is who we truly are. Even those who seem to be the most evil have that light within them. It’s not our job to look for that light; it’s our job to share our own light. We may be the only light that others may see. An old camp song from my childhood starts out, “It only takes a spark to get a fire going…” You are that spark. You are light. Share your light and help illuminate the world around you.

From where I sit, I share my spark to help light the world.

Being the Change. Evidence abounds that when we change how we look at things, the things we look at change. It is also accurate to state that when we change ourselves, we change the world around us. When we seek the good in ourselves, we open the door for those around us to experience good in their lives as well. When we make the decision to share peace, love, and joy, the world around us reflects peace, love, and joy. We each of us have within us the capacity to be the change and bring peace, love, and joy to our families, our communities, and to the world.

From where I sit, I share peace, love, and joy, and my world becomes a little brighter.

Authenticity. As children and adolescents, we were encouraged to conform. Children learn that they get rewarded if they do what the adults around them ask them to do and get punished if they don’t. During the crucial first six years of life, we “domesticate” our children to try to make them be who we want them to be instead of fostering their authentic selves. That process continues throughout adolescence and into adulthood. Whether it is the body shaming of young men and women, the ostracizing of those of differing gender identities and orientations, the critiques of ethnic hairstyles and/or dress, or the political polarization that is all too evident in our society, the authentic self of many in our society is being squashed. If we each can embrace our uniqueness, we can help to facilitate a change in attitude and help society celebrate its diversity.

From where I sit, I celebrate my weirdness and embrace my authenticity.

Staying Connected. In the busyness of life, it is easy for us to get disconnected from those things we value. We lose track of family and friends. We lose our focus on the dreams that we’ve had. We lose track of our connection to the good things in life that come from relationship with the Divine Creator within us. Staying connected to that source allows us to be able to face whatever hardships and challenges we may encounter. Staying connected to that source allows us to be authentic. Staying connected to that source brings hope, peace, and joy.

From where I sit, I maintain my connection to the Divine Creator within me, and I can face the challenges of each day with hope, peace, and joy.

Step up. All around us, we can see people who are in need. They may just need a kind word, or they may need financial or physical assistance. Regarding the gifts you have been given, someone needs you. We are called to share our gifts by that inner voice of conscience. When we listen, we are able to step up and assist where it is needed. If you see a need and you have the ability to assist (in whatever manner you can), don’t hesitate. Give. Your heart will thank you.

From where I sit, I will step up when I see a need and assist as I can.

Step Back. All too often, we react instead of respond. We see something that upsets us, and we quickly click the “share” button or type out a quick text message or email. Or a neighbor puts up a flag or sign that supports the position that we disagree with, and we tear it down or engage in an argument with them because our sensibilities have been assaulted. Step back. Consider the consequences before you press “share” or “send. Think about your words before you speak to your neighbor. Ask yourself if this is going to make things better or worse, and then act accordingly.

From where I sit, I consider the consequences before I take action.

You Are Enough. Many of us doubt our worth because we have been told that we have failed in some way, this or that we lack in some area. We see advertisements every day telling us that we need a specific product in order to be happy, be healthy, be wealthy, etc. We are encouraged to feel that we are lacking in multiple areas of our lives. In reality, our inherent Self is perfect, because we are a reflection of the Creator. When we embrace the concept that we are enough, peace, happiness, and joy flow into our lives, and we realize that we have right relationships with people, with our profession, with our finances, and with our Selves. You are a child of the Creator, and that means you are enough. Embrace it. Celebrate it.

From where I sit, I embrace the “enoughness” in myself and in the universe.

Learning from Our Wounds. We have all been hurt in some way, shape, or form in our lives. For some, the wounds may not be deep; while for others, the wounds may have caused such damage that the person does not believe they can recover from it. Some people live from their wounds and that is their only story. They are very willing to rehash the trauma, whether it is directly or indirectly. It is the center of their lives. Others have learned from their wounds, using the trauma as a guidepost for growth. The first lesson is forgiveness of ourselves and the perpetrator. Forgiveness allows us to learn from our wounds and to protect ourselves from others who seek to cause additional pain. It helps us to release and helps us regain a sense of self.

From where I sit, I learn from my wounds, forgiving myself and those who have hurt me.
