The beginning of a new year presents us with so many opportunities if we are willing to look for them. I am an early riser and often take the time even before getting out of bed to spend time in contemplation/meditation. An important aspect of that contemplation/meditation is gratitude. After starting the day with gratitude, I set the intention every morning to do my best to make healthy choices with regard to food, exercise, and time. I don’t always succeed, yet I don’t beat myself up, because I have the next moment to make a different choice. What are your intentions? Take one step. Each step becomes easier with practice. From where I sit, I contemplate each step along my path and embrace the opportunities to grow.

I could choose peace instead of conflict. As the new year gets underway, there will be times when there is conflict. In the face of the conflict, we can either escalate or de-escalate. We can choose divisive speech or enlightened speech. Instead of perpetuating the conflict, we have the option to view the situation through the lens of peace. It’s a difficult choice, yet the world would be a very different place if peace was our first choice rather than having to be right. From where I sit, I choose peace.

Happy New Year! Today, we begin anew. Today we can decide which of our baggage we will continue to carry and which we will leave behind. If we can take out all of the lessons learned and put them into one bag, that’s the bag we carry with us starting today. It’s time for us to clear the clutter, to hold on to what is uplifting, and to intentionally choose peace, even in the face of conflict and pain. From where I sit, I choose a carry-on rather than a 10 piece baggage set.
